BIM Modelling analyses sun paths
This stunning new build home was created by Jonathan Cheyne and Blair Milne, directors of MAC Architects of Aberdeenshire.
The challenge for the architects was to create a contemporary home on a site which was heavily overlooked, both by commercial properties, a new development evolving as well as bounding a mature forest.
“We used BIM modelling to analyse the sun paths and massing issues as we designed a home filled with light in a south facing aspect,” says Blair. It was this attention to detail which won the firm a string of architectural awards.
The building envelope is heavily insulated, both to keep an Aberdeenhome warm in winter, but also to address potential overheating issues. “The crank incorporated into the footprint combined with the natural roof overhang contribute to the success of the building and helped us to exploit the best views and sun angle,” continues Blair. “Our heating and ventilation strategy – included mechanical heat recovery with ventilation for heating and cooling, and of course the choice of Scandinavian timber windows from Danish firm Rationel. We chose Rationel for the pleasing aesthetics of their products, stylish ironmongery and high performance specification. And they were highly competitively priced.”
Aluminium clad timber Aura Plus triple glazed windows with Argon E gas in the units created additional energy efficiency. The windows were delivered factory painted with black powder coating to the aluminium cladding on the outside. Satin etched glass was used to the rear elevation windows, where privacy was required and to the shower and sauna room.
The building achieved a SAP ‘A’ Rating for the building. A floating staircase and bespoke full height doors with shadow gaps contribute to its contemporary interior design.
Architect Blair continued: “We strive to lead the way in our industry and are proud to be one of only a few practices in Scotland to have 3D BIM software integrated at the core of our business. The latest 3D software is transforming the way we work with our clients – and it was integral to the efficient design and delivery of Westwood Villa.”
The BIM concept creates a virtual construction model of any project no matter what size prior to its actual physical construction and helps to increase accuracy, reduce uncertainty, maximise efficiency and simulate and analyse potential impacts.
